This little scoop is handmade from the burl of a fallen birch tree. It has been carved using only an axe and a couple of knives.
A burl is basically a large group of dormant buds on the side of a tree branch/trunk. The little dots are cross sections of little shoots, and the grain kind of swirls all around. Makes for a tricky carve since the grain direction is so unpredictable. Different moisture content in different parts of the burl made this one dry a bit wonky, so it is not quite circular. Makes for a scoop that is full of character! This one holds about 1.5 tbsp and is 8.5 cm long and 5 cm wide.
